To commemorate the 120th anniversary of Shostakovich's birth in 2026, the symphony scores have been enlarged, making the detailed notes of the large-scale ensemble easier to read. Shostakovich's unfortunate masterpiece, Symphony No. 4, was composed between 1935 and 1936. Rehearsals began in 1936, but the premiere was canceled shortly before the performance and the score was put away. It is said that Shostakovich sensed the danger he would pose if he performed the symphony. Its public premiere was not until 1961. It is said to be influenced by Mahler's symphonies. The score is based on the Selected Works of Shostakovich (Complete Edition), published in Moscow in the 1980s. A photograph of the opening of the first draft of this work's handwritten manuscript is included. Commentary is provided by Nobuo Terahara, who is familiar with Russia during the composer's time.
