Beschreibung
To commemorate the 120th anniversary of Shostakovich's birth in 2026, the scores for his symphonies have been enlarged for easier reading. Symphony No. 3, which the composer himself called the "May Day Symphony," concludes with a chorus based on a poem by Kirsanov. This work, which sings the revolutionary text of a left-wing poet in the vein of the Russian avant-garde, was banned in the 1930s due to criticism of modernism and remained a elusive work until the perestroika of 1988. The score is based on the 1980s Musica edition of "Selected Works of Shostakovich (Complete Edition)." This edition includes previously unpublished editorial notes from the complete edition, as well as an appendix with alternate sheet music. Commentary is written by Nobuo Terahara, an expert on Soviet Russia.
