Beschreibung
The registrations proposed in this edition are the result of a precious collaboration with Olivier Latry, Titular Organist of the Great Organ of Notre Dame de Paris. We offer him our sincere thanks for his invaluable contribution.
This piece is a free variation on the Salve Regina, the most famous antiphon addressed to Mary. The melody is heard almost in its entirety, but in a highly contrasting manner. The piece consists of three stanzas and an epilogue following this structure:
A1-B1-C1/A2 -B2-C2/A3-B3-C3/Epilogue.
The three elements develop from one stanza to the next. The element that varies the most from one stanza to another is element A: simple and stark in the initial measures, it becomes increasingly complex in the subsequent stanzas.
With its grand dissonant chords, B is the most dramatic element. It culminates in a triple forte in the third verse. Element C, on the other hand, is very calm and distant, as if from another age. Indeed, it is borrowed from Jacob Obrechts Salve Regina (on the words Et Jesum).
