Roman Statkowski’s Preludes, op. 37 display, to a degree, links with the early tradition in this genre, associated with a limited number of motifs and a rhythmical regularity resulting from the figuration. There is also a clear reference to the tradition of figurational-expressive miniatures initiated by Chopin, as indicated by the self-contained nature of the individual pieces, and also their arranging in accordance with the principle of contrasting kinds of expression and the succession of keys with their relatives in the order of the circle of fifths. The set is marked by a particular sensitivity to colouristic qualities, which become a determinant of the genre’s twentieth-century tradition.
