The two Op. 26 Polonaises complement one another through contrast, differing in terms of character and the way the form and drama are shaped. The impression of mutual cohesion is reinforced by the presence of a lengthy introduction in the first work and a striking coda in the second – elements which may be read as a kind of formal frame. In both pieces, the dance convention forms the foundation on which Statkowski forges his individual expressive language. Here, music inspired by dance becomes a bearer of artistic substance, but without losing its connection with the dance gestures and generic idiom.
