San Francisco’s wind quintet The City Winds commissioned and premiered Richard Festinger’s 7-minute Windsongs in 1996. The collection of three brief virtuoso movements begins with a perpetual motion line bounced among the players. Slow passages of the central ‘Lento’ are eventually interrupted by high interjections from the flute and oboe that foreshadow the finale’s playfully argumentative passages.
