Christian Wolff is now the sole living composer from the New York School of composition from the middle of the 20th century, a group that included John Cage, Morton Feldman, and Earle Brown. His 9-minute Duo 8 from 2008 is spare and unpredictable, one of a continuing series of mixed duos in his catalogue. The composer and improvisor George Lewis observed that moments within Wolff’s music ‘are bathed in an eternity of timelessness.’ Two performance scores are needed to perform the duo.
