An outstanding theorist, historian and teacher, Stanislao Mattei also had a remarkable career as a composer. He first worked at San Francesco church, taking over as chapel master from Father Giambattista Martini, then as a member of the Accademia dei Filarmonici and chapel master at San Petronio church. The catalogue of his compositions includes liturgical and devotional music in particular, in his devotional repertoire the piece that stands out is the Oratorio della Passione, a piece of music that was greatly admired, loved, and sought-after at the time. In Nuova teoria di musica, the music theorist and historian Carlo Gervasoni defines Mattei’s oratorio «his masterpiece»: a «composition that, according to the sentiments of a number of intelligent people, surpasses everything by the best masters that has been considered part of this genre by virtue of its depth, taste and true expression of devotional feelings».
