This piece came to me at a time when so many of the circumstances and experiences of our present time had drawn me into a place of darkness – a grief that could not be described by words alone. Gradually, grief and healing became the unfolding process of this musical narrative for choir. The poems chosen for this work create a fabric, woven from the threads of classical and contemporary Persian literature. Throughout the centuries, Persian poetry and vocal music have been deeply connected, each carrying the other’s inner world. Here, I have turned to the words of Saadi, Forough Farrokhzad, Ahmad Shamlou, Khayam and other poets – voices from different times, who, together, speak of my inner self, while also reflecting the outside world. The invisible thread weaves together the choral traditions of the West with the vocal traditions of Persia – creating a quiet dialogue between two musical worlds, sung in both English and Persian. Though shaped by different histories, languages, and musical traditions, they meet here in a shared landscape: a tapestry of longing and lamentation for innocent lost souls. They search together for resilience, hope, and light. At its heart, this piece holds a healing narrative: a journey through the human voice, accompanied by the cello in a complementary color to that voice with all ranges. What I have written is an attempt to travel beyond darkness, to cross over it, toward a quiet belief: that even in our most difficult moments, there remains a light to be found, and that light still lives within human soul and our generous earth.
