Anton Wilhelm Amo, an 18th-century African slave who became a Ph.D. of philosophy and taught at the European universities of Halle and Jena, wrote that “God and other spirits understand themselves” through ideas, not via physical senses. George Lewis believes that writing “other spirits” in a primarily Christian culture was Amo’s “cryptic reference to his African roots.” Virtuosic episodes fill this sinfonietta, “perhaps representing pleadings or arguments from the spirits,” wrote a reviewer of the Grossman Ensemble’s premiere.
