Juliusz Zar?bski, like other Romantic composers, was keen to reach for musical genres from the past, especially dance forms. On the one hand, these were French court dances – the minuet and the gavotte – and on the other, the tarantella originating from southern Italy. The Minuet, Op. 1 (published in 1879) is Zar?bski's earliest composition. Anyone who would expect the first opus to be a simple stylisation of a Baroque dance would be mistaken. It is a mature and extensive composition by a concert pianist, in which elements of his virtuoso skills are visible, such as double notes and octave progressions. The salon Gavotte, Op. 29, was composed in 1885, towards the end of the composer's life, who died prematurely. The characteristic features of the dance prototype are present here to a much greater extent than in the Minuet. This composition, maintained in an unusual tempo for a gavotte, Allegro molto, is a graceful and melodic miniature, faithful to classical patterns. Tarantella op. 25, composed around 1884, seems to be stretched between Chopin's Tarantella op. 43 and Liszt's tarantella from the cycle Venezia e Napoli. It contains motifs with repetitions characteristic of this Neapolitan dance. This is a lively and very spectacular piece, certainly deserving of existence on the world music scene.
